    Area of Science:

    • Reproductive Health
    • Genetics
    • Pediatrics

    Background:

    • Down syndrome is a genetic disorder associated with intellectual disability.
    • Oral contraceptives are widely used for birth control.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between oral contraceptive use and Down syndrome in infants.
    • To determine if maternal oral contraceptive usage patterns differ between mothers of infants with Down syndrome and controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Case-control study design.
    • Involved 103 mothers of infants with Down syndrome and 103 matched controls.
    • Retrospective review of oral contraceptive usage history.

    Main Results:

    • No statistically significant difference in oral contraceptive use was observed between the two groups.
    • Maternal oral contraceptive use during pregnancy or in the year prior did not correlate with Down syndrome diagnosis in infants.

    Conclusions:

    • Current findings do not support a link between maternal oral contraceptive use and the occurrence of Down syndrome.
    • Further research may be warranted to explore other potential environmental or genetic factors.
