    Summary

    Vasectomy significantly alters steroid hormone levels in men, decreasing some and increasing others in both blood and seminal plasma. Further long-term studies are needed to fully understand these endocrine effects.

    Background:

    • Vasectomy is a widely practiced method of male fertility control.
    • Information on the endocrine effects of vasectomy is limited, with most studies focusing on short-term effects and a narrow range of hormones.
    • Previous research has primarily assessed gonadotropins and testosterone in blood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the endocrine effects of vasectomy by analyzing multiple unconjugated steroids in blood and seminal plasma.
    • To assess changes in steroid hormone levels at various time points (1, 3, 6, and 12 months) post-vasectomy.
    • To evaluate the impact of vasectomy on steroid distribution within the male reproductive tract.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of unconjugated pregnenolone, dehydroepiandrosterone, androstenedione, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, oestrone, and oestradiol in blood plasma of 20 men before and up to 12 months after vasectomy.
    • Estimation of unconjugated steroids (except oestrone) in seminal plasma from 39 subjects.
    • Preliminary analysis of steroid conjugates (sulphates and glucuronides) in seminal plasma from 14-17 subjects.

    Main Results:

    • Vasectomy was associated with significant decreases in plasma pregnenolone, dehydroepiandrosterone, and androstenedione.
    • Significant increases in plasma dihydrotestosterone and oestrone were observed, with a probable increase in oestradiol at 12 months.
    • Seminal plasma showed decreased dihydrotestosterone and androstenedione, and a probable decrease in dehydroepiandrosterone and increase in oestradiol post-vasectomy.

    Conclusions:

    • Vasectomy induces significant changes in circulating and seminal plasma steroid levels.
    • The observed gradual changes suggest the need for large-scale, long-term studies with control groups.
    • Further research is warranted to fully elucidate the endocrine consequences of vasectomy.
