Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Geriatric Medicine

Background:

  • Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is a neurological condition.
  • Traumatic brain injury can lead to secondary neurological deficits.
  • Ventricular derivation is a surgical treatment for NPH.

Observation:

  • A retrospective study analyzed 63 NPH cases.
  • Focus was on patients with traumatic etiology unresponsive to ventricular derivation.
  • Four cases of post-traumatic dementia were specifically described.

Findings:

  • Post-traumatic dementia presents varied clinical pictures and etiopathogenic explanations.
  • Diagnostic delays and medico-legal issues are common in post-traumatic dementia.
  • Differentiating between curable and incurable forms of post-traumatic dementia is crucial.

Implications:

  • Understanding NPH in traumatic brain injury is vital for accurate diagnosis.
  • Further research is needed to clarify the pathophysiology of post-traumatic dementia.
  • Improved diagnostic criteria can aid in managing patients with cognitive decline after trauma.
