Background:

  • Urticaria is a common condition, and its association with aspirin sensitivity is a recognized clinical challenge.
  • Understanding the underlying mechanisms of aspirin-induced urticaria is crucial for effective patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To delineate the clinical characteristics of patients presenting with aspirin-induced urticaria.
  • To investigate the relationship between aspirin sensitivity and non-aspirin-associated urticaria in this patient cohort.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 71 patients with aspirin-induced urticaria was studied.
  • Clinical evaluations included allergological assessments, laryngological examinations, and histamine dihydrochloride inhalation tests.

Main Results:

  • Of 71 patients, 32.3% had atopic disease and 51.9% had at least one feature of atopy.
  • A significant proportion (69%) experienced urticaria unrelated to aspirin, which often preceded aspirin sensitivity.
  • Aspirin sensitivity was the sole cause of urticaria in 22 patients.

Conclusions:

  • Aspirin-induced urticaria appears to arise from a combination of aspirin sensitivity and a separate, independent urticarial condition.
  • These two phenomena can coexist, with the non-aspirin urticaria often predating the development of aspirin sensitivity.
