Summary

We created software for a treadmill ramp protocol that linearly increases oxygen uptake (VO2), allowing continuous walking during exercise. This new protocol demonstrated a strong linear correlation between predicted and measured VO2 in healthy subjects.

Area of Science:

  • Exercise Physiology
  • Biomedical Engineering

Context:

  • Treadmill protocols are crucial for assessing cardiorespiratory fitness.
  • Current protocols may not always ensure a linear increase in oxygen uptake (VO2).
  • Linear VO2 increase allows for maximal exercise testing until volitional fatigue.

Purpose:

  • To develop computer software for generating a treadmill ramp protocol.
  • To achieve a linear increase in oxygen uptake (VO2) during exercise.
  • To enable subjects to exercise until the end of the test.

Summary:

  • Developed software to simulate treadmill speed and grade, creating a ramp protocol.
  • The protocol aims for a linear increase in oxygen uptake (VO2) using specific mathematical formulas.
  • Applied the protocol to 10 healthy subjects, observing a linear relationship between predicted and measured VO2.

Impact:

  • Provides a novel, software-driven approach to exercise testing.
  • Enhances the accuracy and consistency of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2) measurements.
  • Facilitates more precise assessment of cardiorespiratory fitness.
