Summary

Severe loss of consciousness and motor impairment are key predictors of early death after stroke. Elderly patients should not be denied treatment based on age alone, as age is not an independent risk factor.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Stroke survival is a critical outcome measure, reflecting disease burden.
  • Existing studies often use selected patient groups and univariate analyses for risk factors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify factors predicting mortality during the acute phase of stroke.
  • To inform acute stroke management strategies.

Main Methods:

  • Population-based study of acute cerebrovascular disease in Western Australia (1989-1990).
  • Logistic regression modeling to identify independent predictors of 28-day mortality.

Main Results:

  • Severe loss of consciousness (OR 14.7) and severe paresis (OR 7.2) independently predicted death within 28 days.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Age was not found to be an independent risk factor for early stroke mortality.
  • Conclusions:

    • Level of consciousness and motor power are crucial indicators for directing acute stroke management.
    • Age alone should not be a criterion for withholding stroke therapies.
