Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Surgical Innovation
  • Otolaryngology

Context:

  • Subglosso-epiglottectomy is a surgical technique for specific head and neck cancers.
  • Evaluating surgical outcomes requires assessing both oncological control and functional results.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the oncological and functional outcomes of subglosso-epiglottectomy.
  • To assess the long-term efficacy of this surgical approach.

Summary:

  • The study reviewed 26 cases of subglosso-epiglottectomy performed between 1978 and 1989.
  • Oncological control and patient survival rates were encouraging.
  • Functional results, however, were found to be disappointing.

Impact:

  • Highlights the trade-offs between oncological success and functional deficits in head and neck cancer surgery.
