Summary

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of a formalin-fixed brain from a multiple sclerosis (MS) patient revealed lesion distribution similar to histological sections. MRI signal intensity correlated with MS lesion age and histological features.

Background:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system.

Observation:

  • A formalin-fixed brain from a young woman with a history of multiple sclerosis (MS) was studied using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
  • The patient experienced a relapse before death from pulmonary embolism.
  • Histological and immunocytochemical staining were performed on the left hemisphere for detailed examination.

Findings:

  • Despite fixation reducing relaxation times, MRI provided satisfactory signal and contrast for the fixed brain.
