Background:

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are sometimes linked to gallstone prevention, but the mechanism is unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if NSAIDs, specifically indomethacin, can improve gallbladder emptying in patients with gallstone disease.
  • To determine if this effect differs between patients with gallstones and healthy individuals.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, placebo-controlled study was conducted.
  • Participants received either indomethacin (25 mg three times daily for one week) or a placebo for one week.
  • Postprandial gallbladder emptying was assessed in both groups.

  • Indomethacin significantly improved postprandial gallbladder emptying in all 7 patients with gallstone disease.
