Patients with panic disorder show reduced responses to a 5-HT1A receptor agonist, suggesting a serotonin system dysfunction in panic disorder (PD) pathophysiology. This indicates potential links between 5-HT1A receptor sensitivity and PD.

Background:

  • Panic disorder (PD) is a debilitating anxiety disorder.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate 5-HT1A receptor responsivity in patients with PD.
  • To explore hypothermic, neuroendocrine, and behavioral responses to ipsapirone (IPS), a selective partial 5-HT1A receptor agonist, in PD patients and healthy controls.

  • A double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 14 PD patients and matched controls.
