Background:
- Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is disproportionately common in homosexual/bisexual men with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
- An infectious etiology for AIDS-related KS (AIDS-KS) is hypothesized.
- Human papillomavirus (HPV), specifically HPV-16, is prevalent in homosexual men.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the presence of HPV DNA sequences in Kaposi's sarcoma tissues and cell cultures.
- To determine if HPV-16 is associated with different forms of KS.

- Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was employed using primers specific for the HPV-16 E6 region.
- Tumor tissues (n=97) and KS-derived cell cultures were analyzed for HPV-16 DNA fragments.

- HPV-16 homologous DNA sequences were identified in KS lesions from homosexual men with AIDS-KS (11/69).
- Sequences were also found in KS biopsy specimens from HIV-negative homosexual men (3/11) and classic KS lesions (5/17).
- HPV-16 DNA was detected in KS cell cultures derived from both pleural effusion and skin lesions.
Conclusions:
- HPV-16-related DNA sequences are associated with diverse clinical presentations of Kaposi's sarcoma.
- These findings suggest a potential role for HPV-16 in the pathogenesis of KS.
