Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Malignant melanoma is a serious form of skin cancer.
  • Hypertrichosis lanuginosa acquisita (HL) is a rare condition characterized by excessive lanugo hair growth.

Observation:

  • A female patient with stage IV malignant melanoma presented with diffuse melanosis of the skin.
  • The patient also exhibited symptoms of acquired hypertrichosis lanuginosa.

Findings:

  • The co-occurrence of advanced malignant melanoma and acquired hypertrichosis lanuginosa was documented.
  • The patient's condition progressed rapidly, leading to death within two months of HL onset.

Implications:

  • This case suggests a potential paraneoplastic association between malignant melanoma and hypertrichosis lanuginosa acquisita.
  • Further research is warranted to understand the underlying mechanisms and clinical significance of this association.
