Summary

Bronchiolitis obliterans with organizing pneumonia (BOOP) was not previously linked to polyarteritis nodosa (PAN). This case report details a patient with a subacute BOOP onset followed by fulminant PAN and pulmonary arteritis.

Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Pulmonology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a systemic vasculitis primarily affecting medium-sized arteries.
  • Bronchiolitis obliterans with organizing pneumonia (BOOP) is an idiopathic inflammatory lung disease.

Observation:

  • This report presents a rare case of BOOP preceding a severe systemic PAN diagnosis.
  • The patient exhibited a subacute onset of BOOP symptoms.

Findings:

  • The patient developed fulminant systemic PAN following the subacute onset of BOOP.
  • Pulmonary arteritis was a significant finding in this case, linking the lung and systemic vasculitis.

Implications:

  • This case expands the known clinical spectrum of PAN and BOOP.

Related Experiment Videos

  • It highlights the potential for BOOP to be an initial manifestation of systemic vasculitis, specifically PAN.
  • Further research is warranted to understand the pathophysiological link between BOOP and PAN.
