W E Spoerel, M Varkey, C Y Leung

The American Journal of Chinese Medicine
    |January 1, 1976

    Summary

Acupuncture treatment for chronic pain showed significant improvement in over 60% of patients, with some experiencing lasting relief. However, daily treatments were not more effective than less frequent sessions for pain management.

    Area of Science:

    • Integrative and Complementary Medicine
    • Pain Management
    • Neurology

    Background:

    • Chronic pain syndromes affect a large patient population with long-term duration.
    • Existing pain management strategies often have limitations or side effects.
    • Acupuncture is a traditional therapy explored for its efficacy in pain relief.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture in managing chronic pain syndromes.
    • To assess the duration of pain relief following a course of acupuncture treatments.
    • To compare the efficacy of daily versus less frequent acupuncture sessions.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of 200 patients with chronic pain (≥1 year) received 10 daily acupuncture treatments.
    • Treatments involved individualized needling of body loci (distal and near pain site) and ear acupuncture.
    • Outcomes were assessed post-treatment and after a 2-month follow-up interval.

    Main Results:

    • Overall, 61% of patients with non-headache chronic pain improved or were pain-free post-treatment, with 69% of these maintaining improvement at 2 months.
    • In chronic headaches (38 patients), 81% reported improvement, but only one was pain-free long-term.
    • Neck, shoulder, knee, and low back pain showed >50% sustained improvement; facial pain and trunk pain were less responsive.

    Conclusions:

    • Acupuncture is a useful therapeutic modality for managing various chronic pain conditions.
    • Sustained pain relief is achievable for a significant portion of patients, particularly for musculoskeletal pain.
    • The rapid pain reduction suggests a neurophysiological mechanism, and daily treatments offer no advantage over less frequent ones.
