Genetic analysis reveals that the DRw17(3), DQw2 haplotype is significantly more common in relapsing/remitting multiple sclerosis (RR MS) than in primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PP MS), suggesting distinct immunogenetic origins for these MS subtypes.

Background:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) presents with distinct clinical forms, including relapsing/remitting MS (R/R MS) and primary progressive MS (PCP MS).
  • Previous research suggests potential immunogenetic differences between these MS subtypes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association of specific human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class II alleles with different clinical forms of MS in a Western Norwegian population.
  • To determine if R/R MS and PCP MS are immunogenetically distinct entities.

Main Methods:

  • Genomic DNA was analyzed from 62 MS patients (42 R/R MS, 20 PCP MS) using HLA class II typing.
  • Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis was employed to identify specific HLA haplotypes.
