Summary

Digoxin-specific antibody fragments (Fab) temporarily reduced kidney function in rabbits, decreasing creatinine clearance and urine output. However, kidney function recovered within 5 days, indicating no lasting impairment to tubular function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of digoxin-specific Fab fragments on renal function in a rabbit model.

  • A 2 mg/kg intravenous bolus dose of digoxin-specific Fab fragments was administered to rabbits.

    • The observed increase in tubular Na+ reabsorption suggests that tubular function remains intact despite reduced GFR.
    • These findings indicate that digoxin-specific Fab fragments do not cause direct nephrotoxicity and renal function recovers fully.
