Large epidermoid splenic cysts in children can be successfully treated with partial splenectomy. This spleen-sparing surgery offers a favorable outcome, preserving organ function and avoiding complications.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Abdominal Imaging
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Epidermoid splenic cysts are rare, particularly in pediatric patients.
  • Large splenic cysts can present with abdominal pain or be incidentally discovered.

Observation:

  • Two pediatric cases of large epidermoid splenic cysts are presented.
  • One child experienced right hypochondrium pain; the other's cyst was an incidental finding during abdominal ultrasound.

Findings:

  • Abdominal ultrasound proved to be the most effective diagnostic tool in both cases.
  • Surgical treatment via partial splenectomy, conserving over a third of the spleen, was successfully performed.
  • Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of epidermoid spleen cysts.

Implications:

  • Partial splenectomy is a viable and effective surgical option for large pediatric epidermoid splenic cysts.
  • Spleen-sparing surgery leads to favorable patient outcomes with no reported complications.
  • Long-term clinical, analytical, and imaging follow-up indicates a very satisfactory evolution in treated patients.
