Summary

Cervical lymph node calcification can be a rare, asymptomatic finding on dental X-rays, often linked to past tuberculosis. This case highlights calcified lymph nodes resulting from Mycobacterium bovis infection and its treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Cervical lymph node calcification is typically asymptomatic and incidentally discovered via panoramic radiography.
  • Calcifications in lymph nodes are frequently associated with tuberculosis, particularly after caseation or treatment.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with asymptomatic, massive, irregular, radiopaque masses on a panoramic radiograph.
  • These findings were identified as calcifications within the submandibular cervical lymph nodes.

Findings:

  • The patient had a history of lymph node tuberculosis approximately 50 years prior.
  • The calcifications are presumed to be a sequela of treated lymph node tuberculosis, potentially acquired through ingestion of Mycobacterium bovis-infected milk.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case underscores the potential for long-term sequelae of lymph node tuberculosis, even after successful treatment.
  • It suggests that cervical lymph node calcifications on panoramic surveys may indicate a history of tuberculosis, possibly linked to bovine sources.
  • Delayed diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis can contribute to the development of lymph node calcification.
