Background:

  • Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a protein primarily produced by the fetal liver and yolk sac.
  • Elevated AFP levels are typically associated with hepatocellular carcinoma and germ cell tumors.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with a large cell carcinoma of the lung.
  • The patient exhibited markedly elevated serum alpha-fetoprotein levels (9,300 ng/mL).
  • No evidence of hepatic disease or other systemic abnormalities was found.

Findings:

  • The lung tumor was confirmed to be producing alpha-fetoprotein.
  • Postoperative normalization of serum AFP levels was observed.
  • This case adds to the scarce literature on AFP-producing lung neoplasms.
