CD7 antigen, a marker typically found on T-cells, was unexpectedly detected on a rare malignant mesothelioma in a teenage girl. This finding challenges previous understandings of CD7 expression in non-hematopoietic tumors.

Background:

CD7 antigen is a well-established marker for hematopoietic cells, particularly T lymphocytes and multipotential stem cells.
Malignant mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive cancer arising from the mesothelial lining of the pleura, lungs, or abdomen.

Observation:

A 15-year-old female presented with malignant mesothelioma of the right pleura.
Immunostaining and Northern blot analysis confirmed the expression of CD7 antigen on the tumor cells.
The level of CD7 expression was comparable to that observed in T-cell lines (Jurkat and CCRF-CEM).

Findings:

This study reports the first known instance of CD7 antigen expression in a non-hematopoietic tumor.
Cytogenetic analysis of the mesothelioma revealed hypodiploidy (n = 43).
