Summary

Late-onset adverse reactions to streptokinase, a common treatment for acute myocardial infarction, can cause significant illness. These immune complex-related issues, including rashes and organ dysfunction, prolong hospital stays and require careful consideration.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Immunology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Streptokinase is a widely used thrombolytic agent for acute myocardial infarction.
  • While acute adverse events are known, delayed reactions are less recognized.

Observation:

  • Eight patients developed late, uncommon adverse reactions to streptokinase.
  • Manifestations included vasculitic rashes, abnormal renal and liver function, and adult respiratory distress syndrome-like illness.

Findings:

  • These delayed reactions are likely due to immune complex disease.
  • The observed reactions caused significant morbidity and prolonged hospitalization.

Implications:

  • The morbidity associated with delayed streptokinase reactions is underappreciated.

Related Experiment Videos

  • These findings may influence clinical decisions regarding streptokinase use in acute myocardial infarction treatment.
