Summary

A new dynamic x-ray beam shutter system improves computed x-ray tomography (CXT) imaging. This system adapts to changing angles, enhancing image quality by blocking unwanted x-ray components for the dynamic spatial reconstructor (DSR).

Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • X-ray Tomography
  • Image Sensor Technology

Background:

  • Dynamic spatial reconstructor (DSR) imaging is limited by x-ray projection dynamic range and charge-coupled device (CCD) sensor mismatch.
  • Fixed shutters are ineffective due to rapid angle changes during DSR scanning (15 RPM).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a programmable, dynamic, image-adaptive x-ray beam shutter system for DSR.
  • To reduce the unattenuated "raw" x-ray beam component without degrading image quality.

Main Methods:

  • A system with 28 independently and dynamically positioned shutters was developed.
  • Shutters are controlled based on the angle of view for each of the 14 x-ray sources.
  • The system selectively obscures unattenuated x-ray beams at all angles.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The system effectively reduces the "raw" x-ray beam component.
  • Image quality in regions of interest is preserved.
  • Improved dynamic range matching between x-ray projections and CCD sensors.

Conclusions:

  • The developed dynamic shutter system enhances DSR imaging capabilities.
  • This technology addresses limitations in computed x-ray tomography image acquisition.
  • Optimized x-ray beam control leads to superior image fidelity.
