Background:

Detachable balloons are established embolization materials in neurovascular procedures.
Their application beyond neurovascular interventions is less common, despite potential advantages.

Observation:

This study explores the use of detachable balloons for embolizing large arteries and arteriovenous fistulae (AVFs) in non-neurological settings.
Techniques involve instant, precise, and reversible occlusion, with balloons deliverable to distal locations.
Materials used for inflation include contrast medium or silicone monomers.

Findings:

Fourteen detachable balloon embolizations were performed on thirteen patients with large AVFs (coronary, Blalock-Taussig, vertebro-vertebral, renal) and large arteries (aorto-pulmonary collaterals, innominate artery pseudoaneurysm).

Twelve procedures were successful without complications.

Two failures occurred due to catheter navigation challenges and early balloon deflation.

Implications:

Detachable balloon embolization is effective and safe for treating large non-neurological arteries and AVFs.
Further technical refinement could expand indications for this versatile embolization method.
