Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Oral Surgery
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Garré's osteomyelitis is a rare, non-suppurative sclerosing osteomyelitis of the mandible, often associated with odontogenic infection.
  • Antibiotic therapy alone is frequently insufficient for managing complex cases of Garré's osteomyelitis.

Observation:

  • A case of Garré's osteomyelitis originating from a lower left molar infection is presented.
  • Initial management with antibiotic therapy alone proved unsuccessful in resolving the condition.

Findings:

  • Successful management was achieved through root canal treatment of the affected lower left molar.
  • Complete resolution of the bony lesion was observed 18 months post-treatment.

Implications:

  • Root canal treatment can be a definitive management strategy for Garré's osteomyelitis when odontogenic in origin.
  • This case highlights the importance of addressing the primary dental source in managing refractory osteomyelitis of the jaw.
