Area of Science:

  • Medical Microbiology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Clinical Bacteriology

Background:

  • Ewingella americana is a Gram-negative bacterium
  • Rarely implicated in human infections
  • Clinical significance often unclear

Observation:

  • E. americana isolated from two blood cultures
  • Patient: 75-year-old male
  • History: Post-cholecystectomy

Findings:

  • Biochemical characteristics of the isolated strain compared with 44 American strains
  • Review of previously reported E. americana infections
  • Review of previously reported E. americana pseudoinfections

Implications:

  • Contributes to the understanding of E. americana pathogenicity
  • Highlights the importance of accurate bacterial identification in clinical settings
  • Informs clinical management of rare bacterial infections
