Background:

Ectopic thyroid tissue, a rare congenital anomaly, can occur along the thyroglossal duct's path or elsewhere.
While often asymptomatic, ectopic thyroid can present with compressive symptoms or endocrine dysfunction.

Observation:

A 51-year-old female reported a five-month history of a throat lump sensation.
Physical examination revealed no abnormalities.
Imaging studies, including barium swallow and CT scan, identified a well-defined mass adjacent to the upper esophagus.

Findings:

Surgical excision of the mass was performed.
Pathological examination confirmed the mass to be a nodule of ectopic thyroid tissue.
This represents a rare cause of esophageal or neck mass.

Implications:

This case underscores the importance of considering rare pathologies in the differential diagnosis of neck masses.
Accurate diagnosis through imaging and pathology is crucial for appropriate management.
Further literature review is warranted to understand the clinical spectrum and management of ectopic thyroid tissue.
