    Summary

    Distinguishing unusual aneurysmal bone cysts from telangiectatic osteosarcoma is challenging. Quantitative nuclear analysis using computerized discriminant analysis accurately differentiates these bone lesions in most cases.

    Background:

    • Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) can exhibit high mitotic activity and nuclear pleomorphism.
    • These features complicate the differential diagnosis with telangiectatic osteosarcoma (TOS).

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To establish objective morphological differences between unusual ABCs and TOS.
    • To assess the utility of quantitative nuclear characteristics for differentiating these bone lesions.

    • Semi-automatized morphometric and histophotometric techniques were employed.
    • Computerized discriminant analysis was used on quantitative nuclear characteristics from paraffin sections.
