Background:

Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate cardiac abnormalities in ADPKD patients.

- Echocardiography (M-Mode, 2-D, Doppler) was used.
- Three groups of 15 subjects were studied: ADPKD with normal renal function, ADPKD on hemodialysis (HD), and non-ADPKD patients on HD.
- Patients were analyzed based on renal function, HD status, and duration of dialysis.

- No cardiovascular abnormalities were found in ADPKD patients with normal renal function.
- Increased valvular disease incidence was observed in ADPKD patients on HD (p=0.016).
- Patients on HD for other renal diseases showed increased valvular disease (p=0.016) and left atrial dilatation (p=0.006).
- Valvular calcifications increased in patients on HD for over 3 years (p=0.034), irrespective of the initial renal disease.

Conclusions:
- Cardiac abnormalities in ADPKD patients on hemodialysis may be primarily due to uremic cardiomyopathy.
- A primary cardiac defect in ADPKD patients cannot be entirely ruled out.
- Further research is needed to fully elucidate the relationship between ADPKD and cardiac disease.
