Background:

Humor appreciation is complex, involving cognitive and affective processes.

126 subjects (63 men, 63 women) completed a humor appreciation scale.
Participants performed a word-recognition task using a divided visual field.
Factor analysis was employed to identify dimensions of humor appreciation.

Factor analysis yielded eight distinct humor appreciation factors.
Liking for specific humor types (e.g., disparagement, non-sense) correlated with language abilities.
Significant sex differences in humor preferences were observed.
