    Background:

    • Atopic eczema is a common inflammatory skin condition.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the microbial flora of dermatitic skin, uninvolved skin, and anterior nares in atopic eczema patients.
    • To quantify the prevalence and load of Staphylococcus aureus and other bacteria in different skin sites.

    Main Methods:

    • Sample collection from anterior nares, uninvolved skin, and lesions of atopic eczema subjects.
    • Culturing and quantification of bacterial flora, including Staphylococcus aureus.
    • Identification and characterization of bacterial species and strains.

    Main Results:

    • Staphylococcus aureus carriage was high across all sites (nares 79%, normal skin 76%, lesions 93%).
    • S. aureus was the predominant organism in lesions (91% of flora) with a higher bacterial count (7.5 x 10^4/sq cm) compared to normal skin (7.1 x 10^3/sq cm).
    • Coagulase-negative staphylococci predominated on normal skin (63% of flora), while S. aureus dominated lesions.

    Conclusions:

    • Staphylococcus aureus is significantly enriched in the lesions of atopic eczema.
    • The microbial composition differs markedly between lesional and non-lesional skin in atopic eczema.
    • Targeting S. aureus may be a therapeutic strategy for atopic eczema management.
