Summary

Priapism, a prolonged erection, is often linked to sickle cell anemia. This study suggests a potential connection between an asplenic state and priapism in idiopathic cases.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Hematology

Background:

  • Priapism is a medical emergency characterized by prolonged penile erection.
  • It can be primary (idiopathic) or secondary to various conditions, including sickle cell anemia, trauma, and certain medications.

Observation:

  • This study analyzed 21 patients treated for priapism over ten years.
  • A significant proportion, 43% (9 patients), had sickle cell anemia.
  • Of the 12 idiopathic cases (57%), three patients (25%) had a history of splenectomy for benign conditions.

Findings:

  • Sickle cell anemia is a notable risk factor for priapism.
  • A potential association between the asplenic state and idiopathic priapism is observed.
  • Hyposplenism, particularly in hemoglobinopathy patients, may predispose individuals to priapism.

Implications:

  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the relationship between asplenia and priapism.
  • Considering splenectomy history may aid in diagnosing idiopathic priapism.
  • Understanding these associations can improve diagnostic and treatment strategies for priapism.
