Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Pediatric Oncology
  • Surgical Oncology

Context:

  • Differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) is rare in children.
  • This study focuses on pediatric DTC cases without prior radiation exposure.
  • Patients presented with thyroid nodules, with or without lymph node involvement.

Purpose:

  • To report on the clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of pediatric DTC.
  • To highlight the efficacy of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) in diagnosis.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of total thyroidectomy, neck dissection, and radioiodine therapy in this age group.

Summary:

  • Six patients under 14 with DTC underwent total thyroidectomy and neck dissection.
  • Fine-needle aspiration cytology was highly sensitive and specific for diagnosis.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Post-operative radioiodine therapy and surveillance with thyroglobulin and whole-body scans (WBS) were employed.
  • Microscopic disease in the contralateral lobe was universal; lung metastases occurred in two patients.
  • All patients survived follow-up ranging from 6 to 108 months.
  • Impact:

    • Demonstrates successful management of pediatric DTC using established oncologic principles.
    • Emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and multidisciplinary treatment approaches.
    • Provides evidence for favorable long-term outcomes in young DTC patients with appropriate care.
