Area of Science:

  • Hematology
  • Neurology
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • POEMS syndrome is a rare multisystem disorder characterized by polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal protein (M-protein), and skin changes.
  • Osteosclerotic myeloma is a rare subtype of multiple myeloma associated with POEMS syndrome.

Observation:

  • A patient with POEMS syndrome presented with osteosclerotic myeloma confirmed by bone biopsy.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed discrete lesions with low signal intensity on T1 and T2-weighted images.

Findings:

  • The patient's osteosclerotic myeloma was successfully treated with a combination of melphalan and prednisone.
  • Significant improvement was observed in skin thickening and lower extremity sensory changes following treatment.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case highlights the effectiveness of melphalan and prednisone in managing POEMS syndrome with osteosclerotic myeloma.
  • Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can lead to substantial symptom improvement and enhanced quality of life for patients with POEMS syndrome.
