Summary

This study highlights patent foramen ovale (PFO) in elderly patients, a condition often leading to paradoxical emboli. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for this potentially underdiagnosed condition.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Neurology
  • Geriatrics

Background:

  • Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is an atrial septal defect present in adults.
  • Paradoxical emboli occur when venous emboli cross cardiac shunts to the arterial circulation.

Observation:

  • Two elderly patients presented with clinical evidence suggestive of paradoxical emboli.
  • One patient's PFO was diagnosed via contrast echocardiography; the other's was found post-mortem.

Findings:

  • Patent foramen ovale (PFO) can facilitate paradoxical emboli in the elderly.
  • Diagnosis in older adults is challenging, potentially leading to underestimation of prevalence.

Implications:

  • Increased awareness of PFO as a cause of paradoxical emboli in geriatric populations is warranted.
  • Timely diagnosis and intervention for PFO can improve patient outcomes.
  • Further research into the prevalence and diagnostic challenges of PFO in the elderly is recommended.
