Bacterial keratitis associated with vernal keratoconjunctivitis.

Summary

Bacterial keratitis, a serious eye infection, can develop in patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis, particularly those with corneal ulcers. Prompt treatment with antibiotics and plaque debridement is crucial for recovery.

Background:

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a chronic allergic eye condition.
Patients with VKC may have underlying ocular immune system abnormalities.

Observation:

Two patients with VKC developed bacterial corneal ulcers.
Clinical presentation included pain, redness, reduced vision, epithelial defects, stromal infiltration, calcific plaques, and anterior chamber reaction.
Corneal cultures revealed Staphylococcus aureus, with polymicrobial infections in three cases.

Findings:

Bacterial keratitis can occur in patients with VKC, especially those with vernal corneal ulcers.
Prompt treatment involving topical antibiotics, debridement of calcific plaques, and corticosteroids/cromolyn sodium led to rapid improvement.
