Summary

Succinylcholine (Sch) use in strabismus surgery showed high correlations between drug-induced eye position and awake alignment. However, potential complications suggest avoiding Sch clinically.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the correlation between drug-induced eye position under anesthesia and awake-eye alignment postoperatively.
  • To assess the utility of succinylcholine-induced eye position as a predictor of strabismus surgery outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Succinylcholine (Sch) was administered intravenously to 99 patients post-strabismus surgery.
  • Interlimbal distance was measured at 60 seconds post-injection (VR60) and compared to 1- and 6-week postoperative measurements.

    • Despite predictive value, the risks of Sch complications (masseter spasm, apnea) outweigh benefits in routine strabismus surgery.
    • Current successful surgical techniques for strabismus make Sch use unnecessary.
