Summary

Laboratory blood pressure reactivity testing may predict real-world blood pressure fluctuations. Individuals showing higher task-induced blood pressure increases in the lab also exhibited greater blood pressure drops from screening to baseline.

Background:

  • Blood pressure (BP) exhibits significant variability in daily life.
  • Predicting out-of-laboratory BP fluctuations remains a clinical challenge.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if laboratory-based reactivity testing can identify individuals with excessive out-of-laboratory BP fluctuations.
  • To correlate in-laboratory BP reactivity with BP changes observed between screening and baseline measurements.

Main Methods:

  • Eighty-eight normotensive and untreated hypertensive individuals underwent repeated BP measurements on two screening occasions.
  • In-patient BP was measured at baseline and during four stressful tasks 4 days after screening.
  • Correlation analysis was performed between BP drop from screening to baseline and task-induced BP reactivity.
