Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare school outcomes, including grade failure, learning disabilities, suspension/expulsion, and school absences, between children with asthma (CWA) and their healthy peers.
  • To investigate the influence of socioeconomic status and health status on these outcomes among CWA.

  • Utilized data from the 1988 US National Health Interview Survey on Child Health, a nationally representative cross-sectional survey.
  • Analyzed school outcomes for 536 children with asthma (CWA) compared to 10,362 well children (grades 1-12).
  • Employed multiple logistic regression, adjusting for demographic factors and stratifying by income, to compare outcomes.

Main Results:

  • CWA had significantly higher rates of learning disabilities (9% vs 5%) and averaged more school absences (7.6 vs 2.5 days) compared to well children.
  • After adjustments, CWA showed 1.7 times the risk of learning disability and similar risks for grade failure and suspension/expulsion.
  • Among families with incomes below $20,000, CWA had double the odds of grade failure. Fair-poor health status in CWA doubled the risk of learning disability.

Conclusions:

  • Children with asthma face elevated risks for learning disabilities and grade failure, particularly in lower socioeconomic strata.
  • Health status is a critical predictor of learning disability among children with asthma.
  • Interventions addressing both asthma management and socioeconomic factors may be crucial for improving educational success in CWA.
