Nursing home residents often lose dentures. A new, simple denture marking technique using common materials is quick, inexpensive, and permanent, suitable for dental or nursing staff.

Area of Science:

  • Geriatric Dentistry
  • Prosthodontics
  • Biomaterials

Background:

  • Removable dental prostheses are frequently lost or stolen in nursing homes.
  • Limited availability of dental personnel and lack of training for nursing staff hinder denture identification.
  • Need for an accessible and effective denture marking solution in long-term care facilities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe a modified, simple denture marking technique.
  • To evaluate the applicability and permanence of the technique for nursing home residents.
  • To provide a practical solution for identifying lost or stolen dentures.

Main Methods:

  • A modified marking technique using sandpaper, pencil/pen, brush, light, and a specific methylmethacrylate sealer was developed.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The technique was applied to 26 dentures belonging to 19 nursing home residents.
  • Materials used were common, inexpensive, and readily available.
  • Main Results:

    • The denture marking technique was successfully applied to all labeled dentures.
    • The method proved to be quick, inexpensive, and easy to implement.
    • Markings were non-irritating to oral tissues and demonstrated permanence.

    Conclusions:

    • The modified denture marking technique is a viable, cost-effective solution for identifying removable dental prostheses in nursing homes.
    • It can be performed by both dental and nursing staff, addressing the challenge of lost dentures.
    • The technique offers a permanent, safe, and easily applicable method for denture identification.
