A retroperitoneal mass was diagnosed as Castleman

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Castleman's disease is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder.
  • It can present as a localized or multicentric form.
  • Retroperitoneal localization is uncommon.

Observation:

  • A 29-year-old patient presented with a large (15 cm) retroperitoneal mass.
  • The mass exhibited radial calcification on imaging.
  • Associated symptoms included anemia and hypergammaglobulinemia.

Findings:

  • Surgical resection of the retroperitoneal mass was performed.
  • Post-operatively, the patient's anemia resolved.
  • Hypergammaglobulinemia also disappeared after tumor removal.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Castleman's disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis of retroperitoneal masses.
  • The presence of anemia and hypergammaglobulinemia can be key indicators.
  • Surgical resection is an effective treatment for localized retroperitoneal Castleman's disease.
