Summary

Burn patients show increased granulocyte activity. Their white blood cells (granulocytes) exhibit higher baseline and stimulated cytosolic peroxidase activity, indicating in vivo activation after thermal injury.

  • Purified granulocytes were isolated from peripheral blood of 23 thermally injured patients.
  • Dichlorofluorescin diacetate was used to measure baseline and phorbol myristate acetate-stimulated fluorescence via flow cytometry.

    • This suggests in vivo activation of granulocytes following thermal injury.
    • Burn patients' granulocytes also show enhanced activity upon in vitro stimulation.
