    Area of Science:

    • Thoracic Medicine
    • Pathology
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Mediastinal lymph node biopsy is crucial for diagnosing various thoracic conditions.
    • Interpleural lymph nodes offer a valuable site for diagnostic sampling.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the diagnostic efficiency of interpleural lymph node biopsies.
    • To assess the utility of these biopsies in staging and operability assessment.

    Main Methods:

    • Biopsies of interpleural lymph nodes were performed using mediastinoscopy and hilloscopy.
    • 162 patients (133 males, 29 females) were included in the study.

    Main Results:

    • High diagnostic efficiency was observed for sarcoidosis, silicosis, and Hodgkin's disease.
    • Biopsies accurately indicated the evolutive stage of sarcoidosis.
    • All Hodgkin's disease cases were identified as nodular sclerosis type II.
    • Biopsies aided in diagnosing bronchial carcinoma and assessing operability.

    Conclusions:

    • Interpleural lymph node biopsy is a highly effective diagnostic tool for several thoracic diseases.
    • This method provides valuable staging information for sarcoidosis.
    • It is also useful for diagnosing and assessing operability in bronchial carcinoma.
