  • Mood disorders are a primary risk factor for suicide.
  • Lithium is a well-established mood stabilizer used in treating bipolar disorder and preventing suicide.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the role of lithium prophylaxis in completed suicides.
  • To identify factors limiting the effectiveness of lithium treatment in suicide prevention.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case review of suicide victims in Finland.
  • Analysis of medication compliance and treatment quality in patients who used lithium.
  • Inclusion criteria: completed suicide within one year, use of lithium in the final three months.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Of 20 suicide victims who used lithium, 8 (40%) met criteria for adequate lithium prophylaxis.
  • The majority (85%) of victims had a history of noncompliance with psychopharmacological treatment.
  • Lithium was used as the suicide method in only two cases.

Conclusions:

  • Adequate lithium prophylaxis was observed in less than half of the suicide victims studied.
  • Poor patient compliance with medication is a major barrier to lithium's effectiveness in suicide prevention.
  • Improving treatment quality and patient adherence is crucial for maximizing lithium's role in suicide prevention.
