Background:

Limited data exists on colorectal cancer screening program effectiveness in industrial settings.
Workplace-based screening offers a unique opportunity to reach specific employee populations.

Purpose of the Study:

To establish and evaluate a flexible sigmoidoscopy screening program for employees at a chemical manufacturing plant.
To determine the yield and acceptance of workplace colorectal cancer screening.

Main Methods:

A flexible sigmoidoscopy screening program was implemented for employees over 40 at a chemical plant.
202 workers underwent digital rectal examination and sigmoidoscopy after enema preparation.
Follow-up colonoscopy data was collected for polyp characterization.

A significant polyp detection rate of 31.7% was observed among screened employees.
Colonoscopy revealed adenomatous polyps in 53.5% of those with polyps.
A notable 19.5% polyp detection rate, including adenomatous types, was found in the 40-50 age group.

Conclusions:

Screening sigmoidoscopy is feasible, cost-effective, and well-accepted in the workplace.
The high yield suggests a potential link between chemical plant work and polyp formation.
Findings support reconsidering the recommended age for flexible sigmoidoscopy screening.
