Cell loss in the locus coeruleus (LC) and subcoeruleus occurs in Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and Down syndrome. Parkinson's disease uniquely impacts the subcoeruleus, while Alzheimer's and Down syndrome primarily affect rostral LC cells.
