Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of surgical left atrial isolation for treating chronic atrial fibrillation in patients undergoing mitral valve operations.
  • To assess the impact of concomitant procedures on the success rate of left atrial isolation.

  • Surgical left atrial isolation was performed in 100 patients undergoing mitral valve operations between May 1989 and September 1991.
  • The procedure involved a modified left paraseptal atriotomy with cryolesions to achieve electrophysiological isolation of the left atrium.

    • Left atrial isolation should be considered for patients with valvular disease and concomitant chronic atrial fibrillation.
