Summary

Pathological gamblers did not show significantly different dissociative symptoms compared to controls. This suggests dissociation may not be a key feature of pathological gambling in this patient group.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Dissociation is recognized as a normal process and a feature of mental disorders.
  • The phenomenology of pathological gambling remains understudied.
  • Investigating the link between dissociation and pathological gambling is important.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore a potential association between dissociation and pathological gambling.
  • To contribute to the understanding of pathological gambling's underlying psychological mechanisms.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty adult outpatients diagnosed with pathological gambling (DSM-IV criteria) without comorbidities were assessed.
  • The Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) was administered to measure dissociative symptoms.

Main Results:

  • Pathological gamblers exhibited DES scores statistically similar to normal controls.
  • No significant difference in dissociative experiences was found between the groups (p = 0.540).

Conclusions:

  • Dissociative symptoms, as measured by the DES, do not appear to be more prevalent in pathological gamblers than in the general population.
  • Further research is recommended, particularly considering potential differences in pathological gamblers seeking medication treatment.
