Background:

  • Pleural malignant mesothelioma (MM) is a rare cancer.
  • Localized presentations of pleural MM are exceptionally uncommon.

Observation:

  • A 70-year-old man presented with a 2 x 5 cm nodule detected on chest X-ray.
  • CT scans revealed an extrapleural mass with a thickened parietal pleura.
  • Biopsy confirmed malignant mesothelioma; systematic staging found no metastasis.

Findings:

  • Pathological examination of the 3.2 x 3.1 cm resected tumor showed large polygonal cells with myxoid patterns.
  • Diagnosis was localized pleural MM.
  • Tumor recurrence occurred, with a 29-month survival from initial symptoms.

Implications:
