Summary

Heterotopic ossification (HO) occurs in 39% of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patients, primarily anterior to the distal femur. This condition does not significantly impact knee range of motion (ROM) one year post-surgery.

Background:

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the abnormal formation of bone in non-skeletal tissues.
Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a common surgical procedure to treat severe knee joint damage.
The occurrence and functional impact of HO following TKA require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the incidence of heterotopic ossification (HO) after primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
To assess the effect of HO on postoperative range of motion (ROM) at one year.
To explore potential correlations between preoperative conditions and HO development.

Main Methods:

A retrospective analysis of 63 primary TKA cases.
Radiographic assessment for the presence and location of HO.

Statistical analysis to evaluate correlations and significance.

Main Results:

HO was observed in 25 out of 63 knees (39%), predominantly anterior to the distal femur.
HO incidence was significantly higher in osteoarthritic knees compared to rheumatoid knees (P < .05).
A positive correlation existed between preoperative osteophyte grade and HO incidence.
No significant difference in ROM was found between knees with and without HO at one year.

Conclusions:

HO after TKA is a common, self-limiting condition.
The pathogenesis of post-TKA HO differs from myositis ossificans.
HO does not appear to significantly impair functional recovery in terms of ROM one year after TKA.
