Abstract:
In the first of a two-part series we examine the pathophysiology of oedema--the abnormal collection of fluid in the tissues, which can occur in the interstitial or intracellular spaces. The causes and types of oedema are discussed. Oedema can arise as the result of an injury, acute illness or chronic condition, and nurses in all settings may encounter patients with it.
